Take over or start a new centre: which is best for you?

Take over or start a new centre: which is best for you?As someone considering owning and operating your own Kumon Centre, you may wonder which option would work best for your situation: take over an existing business, or set up in a new location. These two franchisees each chose a different path, but have both experienced great success. They share their experiences with you below: **Take over an existing Kumon franchise and hit the ground running** When Gina Ko became a Kumon franchisee, she decided to purchase an established franchise, and became the Instructor of Kumon Rockdale Education Centre in Sydney. For Gina, the appeal of taking over an existing franchise was clear: Kumon Rockdale’s business operations, customer-base and business reputation were already established. With much to learn as a new franchisee, Gina felt this was the better option for her. “It was easier for me to take over an existing Kumon franchise instead of running a brand-new one”, Gina says. “I was new and needed a lot of practice. By taking over, I felt I could give myself more time to adjust and learn.” **Open in a new location and maximum opportunities for growth ** Kavi Thanabal, who previously led a successful career in accounting and teaching, established Kumon Brabham Education Centre in January 2023. Kavi explains that joining a franchise with global reach and a 65-year history in developing students provides her business with an invaluable level of brand recognition. “[Kumon’s] brand name is already out there, so I would say around 40 to 50 percent of the work in establishing a business is already done”, Kavi says. “Most people know about Kumon and they have a gist of how Kumon works. [A standalone business is] a kind of a gamble because parents don’t recognise you. As a parent myself, I understand how important it is to send a child to a particular enrichment centre to learn”. Kumon supports the set-up of new centres through commissioning demographic research to determine which areas are prime locations for a new franchise. Furthermore, Kumon’s initial franchise fee is only $5,000, one of the lowest fees in the sector. This makes it far easier to establish a new Kumon franchise without having to pay off a large business loan. For new franchises opening in a commercial venue and operating four days a week, Kumon offers a variety of subsidies to provide the strongest possible start. These include: * Rental subsidies * Commercial signage * A Centre Launch Kit containing all the materials needed to establish a Kumon franchise. This includes an initial supply of worksheets, learning materials used in conjunction with the worksheets, student enrolment kits, business cards, and promotional materials including an A-frame, flyers and posters. Kumon has several existing franchises available for sale, right now. This is a great opportunity to take over a business with an ongoing customer base, established reputation and trained staff. Like Gina, you will be supported with thorough training and handover of the business. * Existing franchises for sale may involve a purchase price which is negotiated with the franchisee who is selling. We also have many excellent new locations available. Whether you take over an existing business, or establish in a new location, owning and operating a Kumon franchise is a wonderful opportunity. We are seeking people who love working with children, their community, and who want to make a difference by developing the skill of self-learning in students.
