Kumon franchises: Low start-up costs, strong support

Kumon franchises: Low start-up costs, strong supportAs a franchise organisation, Kumon recognises the challenges that aspiring business owners face today. With inflation and interest rates having sharply risen in Australia and New Zealand over recent months, the costs of setting up any business have increased. For new franchises opening in a commercial venue and operating four days a week, we offer the following subsidies to provide you with the strongest possible start: - Rental subsidies - Commercial signage - A Centre Opening Kit containing all the materials needed to establish a Kumon franchise. This includes an initial supply of worksheets, learning materials used in conjunction with the worksheets, student enrolment kits, business cards, and promotional materials including an A-frame, flyers and posters. Kumon’s initial franchise fee is only $5,000. This is one of the lowest fees in the sector. This makes it far easier to establish a new Kumon franchise without having to pay off a large business loan. Kavi Thanabal, who previously led a successful career in accounting and teaching, established Kumon Brabham Education Centre in January 2023. She is using the support from Kumon to build and grow her franchise. Kavi explains that joining a franchise with global reach and a 65-year history in developing students provides her business with an invaluable level of brand recognition. “[Kumon’s] brand name is already out there, so I would say around 40 to 50 percent of the work in establishing a business is already done”, Kavi explains. “Most people know about Kumon and they have a gist of how Kumon works. So, if comparing Kumon to establishing a standalone tuition centre, it's a kind of gamble because parents don’t recognise you. As a parent myself, I understand how important it is to send a child to a particular enrichment centre to learn”. Kumon commissions thorough demographic research to determine which areas in Australia and New Zealand are prime locations for a new franchise, something that a standalone business owner would have to conduct themselves. “They told me that [Brabham] has got many families to whom we can provide service”, Kavi says. “When we went to visit, they actually spoke to a lot of property developers to help me find a venue”. “My consultant from the Kumon office also came with me to support when I spoke to the property developers, so they could explain the history behind Kumon and the stability in the business. So, this other added service that I got from Kumon actually helped me to get the current Kumon Brabham centre location”. Our low start-up costs and strong support give all Kumon franchises a healthy start. We continue to support our franchisees in the long-term too, so they can sustainably grow their business. Owning and operating a Kumon franchise is the perfect opportunity for people who love working with children, their community, and who want to make a difference by developing the skill of self-learning in students.
