A career with purpose: nurturing advanced learners

A career with purpose: nurturing advanced learnersWhen Toru Kumon released the Kumon Method of Learning to the world in 1958, he believed that helping children to be able to self-learn was the core of Kumon’s mission. From his perspective, discovering the potential of students, and developing their ability to the maximum, is Kumon’s contribution to the global community. Jump to the present day, and Kumon is still very much a mission-driven organisation. Kumon franchisees plan for their students to become self-learners from day one of enrolment. Study projections, regular communication, progress updates, record books, and the Kumon worksheets, are all part of a franchisees’ toolkit to develop their students. Franchisees are supported by Kumon Australia and New Zealand, with frequent meetings, seminars and other professional development opportunities to improve their practice. In November, the 2023 Kumon Advanced Student Forum events will be held in seven capital cities across Australia and New Zealand. These events celebrate the achievements of our most advanced students—those who are studying content five years (or more) ahead of their school grade—as well as those who have completed a Kumon programme. For Instructors who have nurtured these students, the personal sense of reward is immense. Shilpa Shetty, Instructor at Kumon Upper Coomera in QLD, says, “What I love most is seeing the children progress in their learning, whether it be in English or in maths. It’s just an amazing feeling … to feel that I had a part to play in that, it makes [me] feel really good.” According to Forbes (1), purpose is essential for both organisations and individuals: “Purpose is a belief that your life matters and that you make a difference. It is a sense of being guided by meaningful values and goals.” For many Kumon Instructors and associates, a career with Kumon not only allows them to give back to their community, it also offers something immensely important: purpose. Owning and operating a Kumon franchise is the perfect opportunity for people who want a purposeful career, would love working with children, and who want to make a difference in their community by developing the skill of self-learning in students.
